The Portland Trust is committed to promoting peace and stability between Palestinians and Israelis through economic development.

Tourism

The Portland Trust has identified tourism as a sector with potential for growth. In 2009 The Portland Trust represented the private sector in setting up a public-private partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism to promote Palestine as a tourist destination. Technical and financial assistance was provided to help create the Palestinian Tourism Board. A draft operational plan, first year budget and bylaws for the Board have been created. These were submitted to the Palestinian Prime Minister's office in June 2009.

Since October 2010 The Portland Trust has been investigating what can be done to develop local Palestinian tourism through the private sector. A local Palestinian tourism expert has been contracted to conduct the consultation on The Portland Trust's behalf. The results of the study are expected in the coming months and it is hoped that this will form the basis of a Domestic Strategy for the Palestinian Tourism Board to implement when it is established. The plan will recommend immediate steps that can be taken to develop the local tourism industry as well as prioritising investment opportunities and outlining the economic benefits. The Portland Trust will work with the relevant stakeholders to implement the plan.
